Study 02 · Planned

Old tools, kept

On the dokkaebi, and what a household leaves behind.

Medium Research, mixed media

A straw broom and a sickle hung on a plaster wall.

In the old tales, a dokkaebi is not the ghost of a person. It is said to arise when a spirit takes hold of an object, often an old household tool such as a broom, used for years and then thrown away. This study gathers tools like these and records each one three ways: as a specimen, as a cyanotype shadow, and in the blue light the tales say marks a dokkaebi's arrival. The last plate is an autumn courtyard at dusk, swept clean with an old broom, for the night the dead are said to come home.
